VUITTON'S ART
Art patronage is one of Louis Vuitton's favorite pursuits.
Although when I attended the grand opening of their flagship store on Les Champs Elysées about two years ago, I thought the so called art displayed all over the boutique was more or less a joke - but that's just me. I assume that many artsy fashionistas will find themselves in the throes of orgasmic delight to learn more about the matter. The house is quite involved in promoting fresh, new artists and so here is yet another one of their expos. From May 11 to August 26 2007, at L'Espace Louis Vuitton, 60 rue de Bassano – 101, avenue des Champs-Elysées, 75008 Paris, from Monday to Saturday 12:00 - 7:00 and on Sundays from 11:00 to 7:00 you can get an eyeful of « La tentation de l’espace »
For those of you wondering, it is an exposition of art pieces as well as photography dedicated to spacial abyss.

WHAT ABOUT PACS?
Speaking of Monsieur Bean and of marriage, the question of PACS popped up in my head!
For those of you not familiar with the term, it is a form of civil union between two adults of the same or opposite sex possible in France. When it was first introduced in 1999 it solely concerned homosexual couples, but was quickly adopted by heterosexuals who did not wish to marry but wanted to benefit from some of the privileges such as filing joint income tax. Among a number of benefits it also allowed the occasionally foreign significant other to obtaining a specific visa (vie privée et familiale ) that allowed him/her to reside and work in France legally. Naturally, in sync with the infamous French bureaucracy all of this required a mind boggling amount of time, proof and paper work, but in the end it gave the foreign part of the whole a certain amount of possibilities and rights. Now with Monsieur Sarkozy, aka Monsieur Bean, in power who knows what will become of le PACS? How strict will the rules and regulations become? How long will foreign lovers have to wait for their visas? Will it even survive the reign of terror?
Here are a couple more blurbs on the subject:

THE BLACK LACQUERED BISTRO
Black Calvados officially opened its doors exactly one year ago, so it is still a relative newcomer to the 8th arrondissement.
It serves as a cantine to the likes of Jacquetta Wheeler, Charlotte Stockdale, Maria Carla Boscono, Ricardo Tisci, Nicolas Ghesquière, Stefano Pilati, Fabien Baron, Carine Roitfeld, Natalia Vodianova, as well as the rest of the beautiful bunch. Sounds a tad too pretentious? Maye, but a little snobbery never hurt anyone. The sleek spot is worth checking out at least for its unique décor, which features high-gloss lacquered walls and smooth metal surfaces. According to Nicolas Ghesquière’s comment, it is not quite a very Parisian spot but it is nice to have it in the city. I would agree. There is nothing quite like diversity of choice!
The chef – Jerome Lorvellec of Nobu and Pershing Hall put together a spin on the American menu, so expect stuff like lobster rolls and mini Kobe hamburgers but also truffled mac n’ cheese. If you are short on funds, you can also make BC your spot for an apero. I wonder if the new president ever does?

SARCO PRESIDENT
In tune with the old French adage: Le roi est mort, vive le roi! - the king is dead, long live the king
Nicolas Sarkozy, the conservative, beat the socialist, and possibly the first female president Miss Segolene Royale by 53,06 % to the throne, as the new president of the French Republic. The intensely fought presidential election saw an 85% turnout.
And so the sweeping begins...read more news.bbc.co.uk

JARRAR AT SCHERRER
The sometimes old world appeal of Paris just got a little hipper. Bouchra Jarrar, Nicholas Ghesquiere's right-hand woman is stepping into the shoes of the new artistic director at Jean Louis Scherrer. By the same token, the somewhat traditionally luxurious Parisian couture house, gets a rejuvenating injection.
Hip metamorphosis ahead! Jarrar's impressive resume boasts a background in jewelery design for Jean Paul Gaultier before moving to Balenciaga, where she worked alongside Nicolas Ghesquiere for nearly ten years. Work is an understatement when you are the director of the studio and the man's confidante. Responsible for creating ready-to-wear and accessories, she is expected to make her debut for the brand in October for spring/summer 2008. My eyes will be fixed on the podiums.

CHOCOART
We live in an era of perpetual recycling, sampling and morphing, hopefully not because we have run out of fresh, new ideas, but because occasionally certain unpredictable intermingling yields explosively grand results. Or so we hope. La « via chocolat » is a place between an art gallery and a chocolaterie, where skilled cocoasmiths from around the Gaul country display their edible treasures along side the quirky iron sculptures.
Tacky or tempting? The call is yours.
Unusual mixtures are also integrated in to the recipes, so if you are the curious, experimental type it might well be worth the detour. A psy-chocolat-ique analysis is on offer with plenty of cocoa related trivia. My palette will surely not oppose!

FRENCH ELECTIONS
I have already posted about the campaign conscious trends emerging on the Parisian runways, but what of the actual campaign?
Here is a short scoop on last night's results: the French centre-right candidate Nicolas Sarkozy (garnering 31% of the vote) and Socialist Segolene Royal (who took 26%) - possibly France's first female leader, defeated 10 others in last night's ballot, with a record voter turnout of nearly 85%. A nice change following the disastrous results of the last campaign, when negligence to vote lead to surprisingly extreme results.
While we digest these results the contenders are off preparing for the second tour on May 6

DINING AT MUSIC HALL
Being in Europe feels to me on occasion like a stroll through a black and white dream. Everything is a little bit slower, a little bit lazier and of course, logically, more archaic. But there are places where one can go and peek into a world in technicolor.
Music Hall's 'out there' atmosphere strives to provide entertainment as much in the form of a meal as it does with its decor. A little kitch, but nevertheless refreshing among a mass of classic bistros and brasseries. The 70 pop ambiance is a good mood booster and the food is, hmm, let's say nice; tartar de thon, vegetable meli melo, or fondant de chèvre frais. There is a piano bar but count on a dj to add to the psychedelic flavor.

OUI TO WIFI
the hiatus from the blogosphere was absolutely not of my own will, but rather due to the unpredictable events life orchestrates from time to time. As it turns out, I actually missed it! Donc, me voile à nouveau...
Now, back to things of importance. If you have not yet heard Paris is ambitiously striving for a révolution numérique and will soon become one of the world's most wired capitals. The plan is to balnket the city with a free wireless network operated by private companies.
Bertrand Delanoe, the city's mayor told the press "We will act fast and firmly... to create the most favorable conditions for Paris. It is a decisive tool for international competition and thus important for the city." Rumor has it that the system will be up and running by the end of next year.
The city also plans to open Espaces publics Numériques in numerous arrondissements, which will allow people to use computers and take classes on computing and Internet technology. The goal is to make Paris one of the top digital cities on earth in the next decade, a move that could help the city stay competitive in the global labor market.
Have you noticed how the parisians always want a revolution?

GALLIEROCK
Musée Galliera is presently closed. However, it will soon open its gates to honor, for the first time ever, the semi forgotten French designer, star of the 80's, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.
As kitsch and surreal as ever, the emperor of overplay invites you into a space on heavy vitamin overdose! A giant Rubik’s® cube pulsates with acidic colors. Napoléonic, Jean d'Arc-ish and other historic elements blend with some of his sellouts such as teddy bear adorned sweaters, rock icons and cartoons, ponchos for two, postcard raincoats and other visual farrago! A compilation from the 40 years of art and pop-culture inspired labor. Gallierock gave JC/DC carte blanche, and he took them up on it choreographing and producing the whole endeavor. JEAN PAUL GAULTIER DANCES WITH CHOPINOT
Jean-Paul Gaultier has always blown me away and I want to stress that it is not a bloated statement of ass kissing of some sort.
An architecht of clothing, he makes of a dress a perfect construction of poetry, imagination and shape.
I always went to his shows, especially the Couture ones, as if I were going to the theater. When I learned that he has also assembled costumes for over 18 ballets choreographed by Régine Chopinot between 1983 and 1994, I wasn't surprised one bit. In my eyes he has long mastered the art of the spectacle and motion.
This year marks a round 30 years of a spectacular career, and symbolically the dance costumes JPG built are about to leave the Centre chorégraphique de La Rochelle for the famous Parisian musée de la Mode et du Textile to star in their own show, an homage to the creative collaboration between the designer and the choreographer. As a little treat the expo will also feature a few Haute Couture pieces

WHO THE HELL...
Who am I writing for?
On average about 30 of you tune in to the blog on daily basis, but I reckon half of you end up here by accident.
The question has irked me suddenly.
Ultimately, I assume that like most bloggers, I write for myself.
Writing is an act of ego and I might as well admit it.
Thereby, it is safe to say that I use its energy to keep my love and respect for the city going and if by coincidence you get any pleasure or help out of it, then all the better.
Vive Paris! Vive l'égocentricité!

THE UNFORTUNATE SEX APPEAL OF A WASHING MACHINE
As much as I admire the coquette spirit of Chantal Thomas, I must say that the French, including her, are not exempt from occasional episodes of le mauvais gout. This said, the queen of lingerie and the brand Vedette, have teamed up to create this monster of tastelessness: a Chantal Thomas washing machine in Swarovski crystal embellished pink satin. Thankfully this mistake was only made in limited edition. It appears to be a form of temporary insanity on the designer's part, and will hopefully slip into the shadow of oblivion without further ado.

LIVING ON THE SEINE
Why sleep in a hotel when you can have your own peniche, houseboat, moored on the Seine river?
I am not talking about the commercial giants that serve for hostig dinners, or party rentals, but about private floating residences. The Seine is a popular place for soirées, tourist trips, concerts but is also home to many. There is even a special police squad that guards the river and its inhabitants. I've heard many stories of people who chose to sell their Parisian apartments or homes and purchase boats to live in, with all it may entail. But if you just want the experience, without the commitment, you can rent one over the weekend, vacation trip, or if it rocks your boat, even a long term rental. It's absolutely unforgettable to just croll out of your cabin and have breakfast while basking in the sun, admiring Notre Dame or the
many Bridges of the City.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE
Ah! Valentine's day, one of the most commercial holidays of all, void of romanticism, which to me embodies surprise, spontaneity and will, not an obligation! In any case, it's a reminder that we should all be hopeless romantics, at least once a year, and ushers us to buy and give, or to feel miserable if there is no one on the receiving end. This ritual has the French business and restaurant owners grinning, because since a few years the holiday has gained popularity in Gaulle country as well!
Thankfully, mayor Bertrand Delanoë has established a very poetic way to mark the occasion, so now there is more than just predictable candle lit dinners, chocolate covered strawberries and senseless consumerism. The Parisian town hall allocates the use of the city's 170 luminous announcement boards across the 20 districts, to love!
The panels, generally used for mundane city information, carry words of tenderness, from declarations of infatuation to marriage proposals.
You can deposit your message from the beginning of February onwards on the www.paris.fr website, and since love has been modernized this year you can also send in a 30-second video messages and tell the entire city how you really feel!
Great tactic for getting Paris in the mood for love

TARGET MEETS COLETTE
This is a very unlikely encounter and yet here it is!
The middle-American giant's limited edition Proenza Schouler collection will be featured at the Parisian über-chic boutique Colette in just a few days, and as usual with Colette, for just a few days. To be more precise, this lightly priced collection €10 - €108 will be available from February 19 - march 3 2007.
For those on the American side of the pond, shock aside, this is not as big of a deal as it is for the Frenchies, who know nothing of either Target or Proenza.
Americans can enjoy the collection online for 90 days starting Februay 1st!

STOHRER: taste of Parisian decadence
Apparently when the polish princess Marie Leszczynska married king Louis XV she brought her favorite pastry chef with her. This certain Mr. Stohrer sojourned in Versailles for a few years, and during that time created one of those sugary, gluey treats you’ll encounter at Parisian boulangeries and patisseries. The Rhum Baba, is a rich cake soaked in rum and if that wasn’t enough topped wit whipped cream. In 1730 he opened a pastry shop at 51 rue Montorgeueil, and guess what? The shop still stands today. I was told that an army of chefs bakes the delicacy from the original 18th century recipe. The interior of the shop is not to be overlooked; Paul Baudry, the decorator of Opera Garnier, decorated it in 1864

USING CELL PHONES IN FRANCE
In order to work in Europe your portable (cell phone)needs to:
1) Be a tri-band phone, meaning that it can work on the band in France.
U.S. cellphones are on the 1900 band, but Europe uses 900 and 1800 bands.
2) You need a GSM phone, short for Global System for Mobile Technology, a standard in Europe. While some English speaking countries commonly use this ( like the U.K.), most phones in the U.S. are not GSM.
AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile are the carriers that either are GSM or are switching to it. If you have a newer phone from these carriers, you probably have a GSM phone. If you have Sprint or Nextel, you most likely don’t but they may offer GSM phones for rent so make sure to ask.
3) Check to see if your wireless company has arrangements for using your phone overseas (Cingular, AT&T and T-Mobile do, but it MUST be activated by contacting them first). If it doesn't, you can find several companies online that will unlock your phone.
http://cellphones.about.com
So if you lucked out and your phone is unlocked, tri-band and GSM, the next step is to purchase a pre-paid SIM card for 30 euros when you arrive in France. (DO save the existing SIM card you’ll need it when you return home). These pre-paid SIM cards can be purchased in mobile phone shops in France (the primary companies are Orange, Bouygues Telecom and SFR). You can also purchase these before you go from Internet companies such as
http://www.cellularabroad.com
If your phone isn't ready for international jet setting, you can buy phones that will work anywhere in the world at these Internet shops as well.
Otherwise rent a phone for travel; T-Mobile has such offers. You can also rent phones in France once you arrive. Many airports now have stands where you can rent phones near or at the car rental desks Last I heard http://www.fonquest.com
had a stand at the Charles De Gaulle airport - Terminal 2D.

BEING VEGETARIAN IN PARIS
I’ve decided to write about being vegetarian in Paris not because the matter concerns me, as I am a carnivorous beast, but because several requests were sent to me and because being vegetarian in Paris is not always a breeze.
The flesh loving (excuse the pun) French known for their refined cuisine have made their name on specialties such as boeuf bourguignon, le foie gras, les terrines and les andouillettes!
On one hand Parisians enjoy meat, on the other they truly tend to their health and figure, and so you will notice that people may order a steak tartar with mounds of green salad, or liver with veggies on the side.
Being vegetarian and eating healthy in Paris is also a matter of contradictions.
On one hand you will find a large number of « Bio » stores, (health food stores) scattered around town, as well as fabulous bio products at practically every super market you go to. On the other hand finding vegetarian or vegan restaurants in the city is no small feat.
So here is a small compilation of addresses and brands you might enjoy, just in case tripes, hearts and kidneys don’t whet your appetite!
